St. Margarets Academy, Tanzania

St Margaret’s Academy, Tanzania

Mama TeshaSt. Margaret’s Academy sprang from the heart of Mama Tesha, a life-long educator. In the early 1990’s, when AIDS started to take its toll on her country of Tanzania, Mama took dozens of orphaned children into her home and provided them with an education. But soon her home became too small to accommodate the rapidly growing number of AIDS orphans.

In 2001, Friends of Africa Education raised enough funds to construct a school building for Mama Tesha and her children–and St Margaret’s Academy was born! Friends of Africa Education has continued to support the efforts of St Margaret’s Academy through:

  • building additional classrooms
  • building a kitchen/dining hall
  • shipping school supplies, books, and food
  • providing educational sponsorships for more than 100 students

Where is St. Margaret’s Academy today? St Margaret’s Academy supports over 450 students. Many of the students are AIDS orphans or live in socially vulnerable situations. Despite vast challenges, the school is ranked one of the top in the country. What an amazing achievement!

Uluthe/ Mungao, Kenya

Education is crucial to the future of a community. George Oyeho understands this concept. George is a retired Colonel in the Kenyan armed forces who now lives in the United States–but his heart resides in the small village of Uluthe, Kenya where he grew up. George has launched a substantial program to bring clean water, medical treatment, and quality education to Uluthe and the surrounding sublocation of Mungoa.

The community is in desperate need of more teachers, classrooms, and school supplies. Tragically, not all of the a sub-location students children in the community can attend school because these essentials are lacking.

Friends of Africa Education has supported the efforts of the Uluthe/Mungoa community by:

  • building additional classrooms and latrines
  • funding additional teachers
  • funding a land purchase for future school construction
  • funding repairs to existing school buildings
  • providing school uniforms
  • shipping school supplies and books

Educating the children of Uluthe/Mungoa will not only provide a pathway out of poverty for each child, but will create future leaders who can help the community and country flourish.
