This is a story about an adventurous ten year old boy named Keenan.

Keenan lives in the Seattle area with his parents Marty and Chris. Their family had the opportunity to visit Tanzania in 2008. As sponsors of a student at St. Margaret’s Academy, the highlight of their trip was hosting a Christmas party at the school for students and staff. . . and of course spending valuable time with their sponsored child.

Keenan was profoundly impacted by his trip to St. Margaret’s, and he was determined to return someday to help his new friends in some way.

Well, a few months ago he did just that. (This is where the dreaming big part comes in.)

Keenan started a fundraising effort called “Kilimanjaro for Kids”. To inspire others to give, he and his parents would bike 100 miles across Tanzania, THEN climb Mt. Kilimanjaro–the highest peak in Africa at 19,300 feet. This would be a remarkable undertaking for anyone, let alone a ten year old boy.

The family embarked on their adventure this past December.

They biked four days through countless villages and experienced rural Tanzania and its people up close. Rough dirt roads made the route challenging at times, but meeting villagers along the way made time pass quickly. Once they reached their destination, the second half of their journey began–an eight day trek to the peak of Kilimanjaro.

Keenan did an amazing job climbing the mountain. On summit night, Keenan had to turn around with his mom at 17,000 feet. He became too ill to continue, but asked his dad to summit for the family–which he did! Once off the mountain they were greeted by African drums and singing in celebration.

(Now this is where the big heart part comes in.)

Through the support of his friends and family, Keenan raised $5,865 to help build a classroom at St. Margaret’s Academy. This new classroom will provide twenty-five more children the gift of education.

Keenan is truly an inspiration.

Donate now through Dec 31 and your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of friends hoping to inspire others to help us reach our goal of raising $120,000.

Seven classrooms are urgently needed in Tanzania and Kenya. The most vital need is in the Uluthe community. Over the last two years, Friends of Africa Education has funded the construction of 9th and 10th grade classrooms for Uluthe. However there are no 11th or 12th grade classrooms or teachers within a 10 mile radius of the village. So for the 10th graders to advance to the next grade level, classrooms must be built!

This problem can be solved. If we build the two classrooms, the Kenyan government will supply the teachers!

We know you have many choices for giving, especially at the end of the year. We invite you to place Friends of Africa Education at the top of your list. 100% of your donation will go to building classrooms.

$95 = one day’s construction costs

$665 = one week’s construction costs

$2660 = one month’s construction costs

How many days, weeks, or months are you willing to provide?

The construction of two new classrooms at Uluthe Secondary School is almost complete! These classrooms will allow for more children in the community to advance their education beyond primary school. Because this is the only secondary school in the area, there is such excitement behind this project. Thank you to all of our donors who made this possible.

Friends of Africa Education (FOAE) is excited to announce Mama Tesha’s visit to Minnesota on Sept 2. Mama is the founder and director of St. Margaret’s Academy in Tanzania, East Africa.

Mama Tesha is eager to update us on the progress at St. Margaret’s Academy. Ten years ago Mama started teaching dozens of orphaned children in her small home in the city of Arusha, Tanzania. But with the help of generous supporters of FOAE, a school building was constructed in 2001. This school has grown to more than 600 nursery/primary students. Despite vast challenges facing the students and staff at St. Margaret’s Academy, the school is now ranked 9th academically in the nation (out of more than 14,000 schools). What an amazing achievement!

Mama will tell you with such emotion that two of her original students, who first began their education on the floor of her tiny home in Arusha, are now heading to the university this fall. These are the first of many to follow. Mama and the staff at St. Margaret’s Academy are dedicated to educating the future leaders of their community and country.
